Item Description
Containing some of writer Gardner F. Fox’s most imaginative segments, this issue finds the JSA volunteering to help a scientist with his “Dream Recorder”. Unfortunately, the scientist is actually the dreaded villain Brain Wave and the machine is really a “Dream Inducer”. It will actually cause the members of the JSA to have nightmares and eventually go mad. When the JSA awakes, they are truly mad. Strangely enough, the machine increases the brainpower of Johnny Thunder and when he awakens, he uses his magic thunderbolt to free the others. With that action, he reverts to his usual simple self. This is Brain Wave’s fourth and final appearance in an issue of All-Star. The segment featuring the dreams of Dr. Mid-Nite is remembered as one of the most human moments to be found in a comic from the forties. During his nightmare, the Doctor has become a virus which is now killing manlike germs. The shock of this realization brings him to tears. Other segments are just as interesting and each is individualistically tailored to the strengths and weaknesses of the featured hero. For instance, during the Atom’s story, he shrinks to a smaller size. Artists who worked on this issue include Martin Naydel (who did the cover), Joe Kubert and Martin Nodell. The pages are off-white to white. The book is CGC-certified 7.5 (VF-)
