Auction #183 - Part II
Item numbers 1292-2528 in auction 183
Item Description
For the first time, readers are introduced to the Batmobile with its bat-head front. The cover, by Bob Kane, breaks away from the simplicity of the previous few issues by creating a complex scene involving Batman and the traditional scales of justice. An over-sized Batman holds the scales as a confident Robin stands astride one of Gotham’s tallest structures. The criminals cower defiantly below them. The image really drives home what would become a central preoccupation of Batman over the years; Gotham City is his town and all who commit crimes there will pay. It may be Kane’s finest solo work on the character. The issue also contains another appearance by the Joker. Writers on this issue include Bill Finger, Henry Boltinoff, and Clem Gordon. Pencils and inks are handled by Jerry Robinson, George Roussos, Bill Carney, and Cliff Young. This is the last time that the title would appear quarterly. With the next issue, it moved to bi-monthly. The pages are light-tan to off-white. The book is CGC-certified 4.5 (VG+).
