Item Description
5x6-1/8x1" deep wooden box with embossed leatherette cover designed like a book opens to reveal two compartments holding 35 booklets, each 2.5x4" with eight pages, along with announcement folder. Books were issued by Stevens-Davis Company of Chicago in a set of 52, designed for distribution to its own and other companies' employees to inspire them to attain greatness. Each booklet has eight pages and tells the inspirational story of a great American. Numbers include 1 through 11, 14-17, 19, 20, 23, 24, 27, 29, 30-33, 35-38, 40, 44, 47-50. Includes: George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas A. Edison, Gen. John J. Pershing, Col. Charles A. Lindbergh, Abraham Lincoln, Douglas Fairbanks, and Harvey Firestone. Book #35 is "American Athletes" issue with golfer Bobby Jones on the front cover and baseball player Rogers Hornsby in batting pose on back cover with text "To Win, Keep Your Eye On The Ball." Inside has photo articles on swimmer Johnny Weissmuller, football player Murphy of Penn and tennis player Big Bill Tilden. Box is Exc. Booklets show varying degrees of handling wear and grade as follows: 40% are Fine, 40% are VG and 20% are Good. Wonderful inspirational group.
