Item Description
8x10" sheet of “Wendell L. Willkie/15 Broad Street/New York” stationery dated July 16, 1941. Letter is addressed to York, PA journalist Harry McLaughlin. Willkie says “I Am Afraid If I Gave You The Interview Which You Suggest, I Would Find Myself In Considerable Difficulty With The Many Newspaper Correspondents Who Regularly Cover Me. If You Have Been In The Newspaper Game For Some Time, You Will Appreciate That Correspondents Who Regularly Cover A Man Expect Him To Give To Them Any Special Interviews. Good Luck To You. Sincerely Yours, (Signed) Wendell L. Willkie.” Paper has tip of upper left corner off and .5x1" gray mark at far right where some surface paper is off the reverse which also has seven spots of residual glue/paper from scrapbook mounting. Lot includes four glossy 3.25x4.5" photos taken when Willkie visited Pennsylvania State Capitol at Harrisburg. These have Willkie’s name inked on back and one includes Governor Arthur James. Photos are dated Sept. 4, 1941. Three show Willkie clearly and one is an outdoor crowd scene with his vehicle at center. Minor wear on reverses. A few faint gray marks on the Willkie/James photo which includes an Abraham Lincoln impersonator in stovepipe top hat. From the collection of newspaper editor Harry McLaughlin and comes with Hake’s COA.
