Item Description
Newsman Harry McLaughlin and his photographer Bob Motter attended the 1953 Eisenhower-Nixon Inaugural. All autographs were obtained in person and the nine glossy photos are all original prints (two have some masking tape on reverse edges). Unfortunately, McLaughlin did not, in 1953, appreciate the potential value of the autographs he was collecting. The inaugural program has seven strips of somewhat yellowed cellophane tape on the front cover. The strips range from .75" to 3" long but the only coverage of autographs are the tail end letters of “Ryan”. The white areas of the cover also have many tiny tan age dots. The majority of signatures are very clear. Going counter-clockwise from left side of the capitol dome are: Dick Nixon; Pat Nixon; Earl Warren; Thomas Ryan (Pat’s older brother plus apparently his wife) Dorothy Ryan; F. Don Nixon (Richard’s brother plus his wife) Clara Jane Nixon; three signatures upper left corner only partially showing as ink disappeared from silver color area; and resuming at lower right: Hannah M. Nixon (Richard’s mother); F. A. Nixon (Richard’s father); Ernestine Nixon Noll (probable cousin to Richard); Edward C. Nixon (Richard’s brother); Robert L. Davis (unknown to us); R. E. Harrison (unknown to us); E. L. Nixon (unknown to us); Jim Hagerty (Ike’s press secretary) and visible but no ink color over the capitol dome is Chairman of Republican National Committee Arthur E. Summerfield (tape over last three letters). Interior of 48 pg. program is Exc. Additional items are: A) Western Union Telegraph from Nixon’s staff to McLaughlin about where to pick up event tickets. Aged but Very Good. B) Four inaugural event tickets. All with tape/glue on reverses but clean fronts. One reads “Press.” C) Invitation to ball with hand-inked names “Mr. & Mrs. Harry J. McLaughlin.” Tape on one front corner and 11 glue marks on back. D) Inaugural Ball 16 pg. program. VF. E) Nine glossy photos with margins reading “Bob Motter York, Pa.” First two are 5x7" of Nixon waving and with Pat. Other seven are 8x10". One shows Pat with Nixon’s mother. Others are of parade including Ike in Cadillac. Minor margin and reverse age traces. Very clean. From the collection of newspaper editor Harry McLaughlin and comes with Hake's COA.
