Item Description
Published by the company that would eventually become Archie Comics, this issue promises "Thrills, Action, and Adventure" and it delivers on that promise. The dramatic figure on the cover is the Wizard. This issue holds his first appearance as well as his origin. His story is written by Will Harr, who had already been working on other features for MLJ Publishing as well as titles for Marvel and Lev Gleason Publications. The art was done by Edd Ashe Jr., who would also work at Fiction House, America’s Best Comics and Hillman Publications. Magicians were an extremely popular subject for comics at the time. Many feel that the early appearances of the Wizard bore a very striking resemblance to the successful newspaper strip, Mandrake the Magician. For the first six issues of the Wizard’s run, he was a more traditional stage magician with no real super-powers. It was explained that he had worked extremely hard to develop his natural skills when he was young. As a result of this hard work, he gained magical powers that included psychokinetic abilities as well as clairvoyance. In the seventh issue, his stage garb was traded for a more traditional superhero costume. Suddenly, he was running around in tights. Eventually he acquired a sidekick name Roy the Super-Boy. One notable aspect of his title is the early cross-over story (also in issue #7) with another of MLJ’s superheroes, The Shield; the two would eventually share a title together. Other heroes making an appearance in the issue being offered include Swift of the Secret Service, The Westpointer, Manhunters (By J. Cole), Mystic, and Scott Rand. In addition to the Wizard, the book features another magician named Kardak the Mystic Magician, who wore a turban with his suit. The stand-out story for many features the Air Patrol in Sky Raiders of the Western Front. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified 7.5 (VF-). According to the CGC Census, this is the highest graded restored copy they have seen. CGC lists the restoration as apparent, slight, and professionally done. Restoration includes: color touch, tear seal, spine split, and glue on the cover.
