Item Description
2x2-5/8" Cuban card issued as a premium by Billiken brand cigars. Cards in this set feature players from the 1923-24 Cuban Professional League. The set includes 15 cards each for the four teams that participated that season: Almendares, Habana, Marianao, Santa Clara. Glossy front features a bw photo, players name and team "Charleston, S Clara B.B.C." Superb crisp, clear image. The back of the card has an ad for "Billiken." Cards in this elusive set are among the scarcest and most popular of the pre-war Cuban issues and this is one of the key cards from the set. Designated by SGC as being from the "Richard Merkin Collection" and comes with Hake's COA. Oscar Charleston (1896-1954) was a Negro League star who played in the Cuban League for seven seasons between 1920-1930. He had a career batting average of .360, an all-time Cuban League high. A multi-talented star, Oscar Charleston was renowned by those who saw him play as the finest all-around player in Negro League history. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976.
