Item Description
First is .75" wide enamel on brass lapel stud with threaded cap on reverse. This rare piece is beautifully designed and reads "No Pasaran/Mackenzie Papineau Battlion." The Spanish phrase translates to "They Shall Not Pass" and was made famous by Dolores Gomez, a member of the Communist Party of Spain in a speech July 18, 1936 at the time of the siege of Madrid by Franco's forces. The lapel stud was issued for use by members of a battalion of Canadians who fought as part of the XV International Brigade on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. This piece dates from around 1937 by which time some 1200 Canadians were involved in the conflict and the battalion was named for William Lyon Mackenzie and Louis-Joseph Papineau who lead the 1837 Rebellions. The battalion was formed at Albacete, Spain under the command of Edward Cecil-Smith, a Montreal-based journalist and trade union organizer. The second item consists of enamel hanger with suspended brass bell picturing a soldier. This reads in full "1939/Friend/Abraham Lincoln/Brigade/For Liberty/In Spain." Third is a 9/16" litho button showing food products and reading "Food For Spain." Last is .75" tall enamel on brass pin with white cross design surrounding the bow of a ship with text below "American Relief Ship For Spain." All four items are in essentially Mint condition. The Canadian piece is rare and the Lincoln brigade item is scarce.
