Item Description
2.25" with convex cello held in brass ring. Loop at top indicates it was once suspended from a ribbon. Pictured is "James Arkell, Canajoharie, N.Y." Small 1/16" age dot at lower left. Arkell was a one term senator in the NY legislature, elected 1883. He was a leading citizen of his town and is considered the Father of the Paper Sack Industry. The Civil War made cotton bags too expensive for flour and dry goods so he invented a manila paper sack of strength and durability. He was a friend to President Grant who came to Arkell's summer home atop Mt. McGregor where he finished his famous biography and then quickly passed away. Several printed pages of information about Arkell come along with the item.
