Item Description
1.25" celluloid also reading "Toledo, O., 1908." We've seen two others with same front design but those had an open back with horizontal barpin mounted to a yellow fabric rosette. This has a covered tin back with a pair of cut-out pointed prongs intended for fastening to fabric. Sherwood was active in women's organizations during the late 19th and early 20th century. She was one of the organizers of the Grand Army of the Republic Women's Relief Corps and she served as their second National President. She was known and described at the time as a "Freethinker" and "Active Suffragist." Sherwood was the wife of Congressman Isaac Sherwood and she was known as "The Poetess of the Congressional Circle." She died in 1915 in Ohio although her funeral service was in Washington, D.C., a tribute to her national prominence. One of only three examples we know of but the only example with this style reverse. A number of fine hairline scratches show only in reflected light. Totally clean and displays Mint.
