Item Description
2-3/8" celluloid mirror has extensive loss and crazing of the silvering on the mirror side and some tanning on the photo side showing her posing in a fur coat with fur brimmed feather accented hat. As a stage actress and feminist she was popular and controversial in her day. She opened her own Bronx theater in 1910 aptly named the Cecil Spooner Theater. One of her productions, "House of Bondage", focused on the prominent suffragist issues regarding the economic causes driving women into prostitution. The play resulted in her arrest. The police were alarmed by advertisements for the production so they attended a performance and a stenographer took notes. Spooner and her manager were arrested just as the next evening's performance was about to begin. She was arrested and charged with being in violation of Section 1140A of the Penal Code. Eventually the play was altered with some of its more graphic scenes deleted. The mirror likely dates to around 1915. Obvious age but still displaying nicely.
