Item Description
First frame is 17x20" with 15.5x18.75" opening revealing India ink and brown watercolor art of two army sergeants talking to young girl on French street which has flags hanging from buildings. Art is signed in ink at lower right "T. Oakley-18". Second frame is 14.5x14.75" with archival mat revealing 7.5x7.75" sheet with nice litho pencil art of four soldiers carrying stretcher through WWI trench. Art is unsigned. Third frame is 17.25x21" with 12.25x16.25" opening revealing pencil and watercolor image of pretty woman wearing evening gown relaxing on bed clutching flowers gazing out star filled window. Art is signed at lower right in ink "T Oakley-". First two originals are c. WWI, third original is c. 1950. Second original has a few light fingerprints in white area at lower left, third original has bit of paper rippling at bottom of blank area below image. All three overall Fine/VF. Thornton Oakley (1881-1953) studied under noted illustrator Harold Pyle in the early 1900s and went on to become an illustrator for various magazines including Scribner's, Century, Harper's Monthly, and Collier's. The United States government distributed lithographs of his patriotic drawings of war work in WWI. He also illustrated a series of travel books written by his wife between 1924 and 1951.
