Item Description
Pair of art boards, each approx. 10.25x11.25" have a total combined India ink image area of 5.5x21". Art shows excited man running into a diner saying "Could I Have A Cup Of Black Coffee?" Panel one shows three countermen yelling to each other in consecutive order "Hey Joe! Draw One!; Hey Mike! Draw One!; Hey Sam! Draw One!" with two smaller word balloons behind the counter with text "Hey Pete! Draw One!; Hey Al! Draw One!" Second board shows three upset countermen saying "It's Coffee" as customer says "It's Ink--It's Ink--" with two additional word balloons reading "It's Coffee!" as customer says "It's Ink!" Last panel shows three countermen looking startled as happy customer pours out black coffee saying "Hey Reader!! Look! Izzat Coffee Or Black Ink--Hah?" Bottom margin is signed in black fountain pen ink in 1.75x8" area "To David Paul Wigransky With My Sincere Wishes Harvey Kurtzman". Kurtzman has also signed the art at the left side in bold India ink "H. Kurtz" along with his man figure image. The art originally had an additional center panel which showed the customer saying "Uk! This Isn't Coffee!! It's Black Ink!" as countermen all say "Ink?", but this panel art is no longer present. We have included a photocopy of the panel as it originally appeared. Both art boards are evenly tanned and have some dust soiling and a few faint moisture marks here and there. Surface paper of first art board has light vertical rippling in center. A lead pencil line is between the last two panels as originally done by the artist. Both art boards are VG/Fine overall with a bit of white-out here and there in image areas but otherwise image areas will mat and frame to near Fine appearance. Silver Linings was created by Harvey Kurtzman and ran in the New York Herald-Tribune from March 7 through June 20, 1948. There were only nine strips in the series which makes this art incredibly rare and historically important as it's an example of Kurtzman's earliest humor work. Well drawn and funny.
