Item Description
Linen-backed poster is 14x20 1/8" with wonderful image of young girl sitting on oriental rug playing chess on board which is held in place by several illustrated books. Text at top “The Child A Calendar-1903" and text at bottom “Published For Jessie Willcox Smith and Elizabeth Shippen Green By Charles W. Beck, Jr.-Philadelphia”. Upper right has image of rose with initials “SG” ©1902 C. W. Beck, Jr. Upper and lower right each have very faint moisture mark, otherwise poster is VF/Exc. as linen mounted. Smith and Green were two of this country’s most famous female illustrations of children’s books in the early 1900s. Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy Of Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins and then under Howard Pyle at the Brandywine School. She may be most well-known for her “Good Housekeeping” covers which she painted from 1917 to 1933. **See item #2087. Elizabeth Shippen Green (1871-1954) also studied under Howard Pyle where she met Jessie Willcox Smith. She illustrated various magazines and books and in 1911 signed an exclusive contract with Helper’s Monthly. She was lifelong friends with Smith and they lived together with Violet Oakley near Philadelphia until Green married. Poster had extremely limited distribution as in-store advertising and is superb for display.
