Item Description
This item is perhaps the Sullivan addition to the DeWitt listings, designated AL1864-108. The item is not shown in Sullivan, but the shape and size matches his listing. The brass shell frame is 1x1-5/16" tall (26x32mm) with Mint luster. The ferrotype is most unusual in that it shows Lincoln from the waist area and up. Much more of his suit shows on this item than on any other 1864 ferrotype we know of. The photo does not match any of the five designated images shown in DeWitt/Sullivan nor does it match any photo in Hake Book III. The emulsion is near 100% complete and with more of a matte than glossy finish. On the reverse, the brass frame edges fold over three sides but there is no excess fold on the right edge. There are two pinholes in the brass on the left folded panel. As made, there is no pin. A rare photographic image of Lincoln and an equally rare item. Morry Greener Collection.
