Item Description
1-5/16" (33mm) in lustrous white metal. In 1866 the burning issue was how to return the succeeded states to the Union. Johnson decided to poll the public and a convention was held in Philadelphia in 1866 which resulted in this medal. Front has his high relief portrait plus his name and title "President U.S." Reverse reads "The People/Must Be Trusted/With Their/Own Government/National Convention Held At Phila: Aug. 14. 1866." Very small loss of silvering mostly from his jacket area on the front and a few scattered pinpoints on the reverse. Still about uncirculated.
