Item Description
This is among the very best, most impressive and rarest 1868 Grant pieces. It is a large silvered brass shell 1-3/8" (34mm) in diameter and with a small cut-out loop on top side edge so it could be suspended from a chain. One side has detailed raised bust of Grant in military uniform facing left. Text surrounding is "For President U.S. Grant 1868." Vast majority of silver flashing remains. The opposite side has a spread wing eagle above large circular ferrotype photos with the names above "Gen. U. S. Grant" and "Schuyler Colfax." There is a small emulsion bubble on the top edge of the Colfax photo but the emulsion is not cracked. The only other near microscopic flaw is a pinpoint speck missing from the right side of Colfax's beard. Overall the emulsion on both photos is remarkably NM and with high gloss. Below the ferrotypes the embossed brass reads "For/President/Vice Pres." While the metal areas have a little brass tone, majority of silver flashing remains. Overall Exc. condition and a rare highly desirable ferrotype shell.
