Item Description
11/16" (18mm). This is a smaller version similar to the larger Grant uniface jugate item #188. The brass shell has spread-wing eagle above the ferrotype portraits which each have the last name of the candidate above their heads. Below the portraits is a shield plus tiny text "For President/Vice Pres." Item has a tin plate on the reverse which originally had a vertical stickpin. Stickpin is gone and instead the item has a neatly executed 1/16" dia. hole at the top center through which a brass movable stickpin has been inserted. The Greeley emulsion has quite a few but extremely tiny specks or tiny lines of missing emulsion but still the image remains around 93% complete with clear facial details. The Brown ferro has a number of near pinpoint specks of missing emulsion but these are largely on the bkg. area and for practical purposes so tiny as to barely detract from the very complete portrait image. The brass luster remains Exc. An extremely rare uniface jugate and one of only about six different designs for these 1872 candidates. The piece is a mate to Grant DeWitt/Sullivan 1872-24. Rarely offered and still displays VF.
