Item Description
Bob Hoffman (1898-1985) was a long distance runner, a competitive oarsman, a champion canoeist, and an amateur boxer before focusing his energy and attention on weightlifting. Considered the "Father Of World Weightlifting" he was a U.S. Olympic weightlifting coach from 1948 to 1964 and actively promoted the sports of power lifting and body building. A decorated veteran of WWI, Hoffman founded the York Bar Bell Company in 1932 and published "Strength And Health" magazine. Many world-class athletes were either employed or received college education due to Hoffman's support. He guided and influenced weightlifting for over half a century and served as an official advisor on youth physical fitness for Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Nixon. This is an extensive lot of ephemera. From the collection of newspaper editor Harry McLaughlin and comes with Hake's COA. Autographed items include: Weightlifter Vasili Alexeyev signed photo, 1976 "U.S. Senior National A.A.U. Weightlifting Championship Final Olympic Trials And Mr. America Contest" program with front cover signed by some 25 participants including Bob Hoffman, handwritten postcard from John Angola, handwritten postcard from Joe Puleo, pair of Russian Christmas cards signed by Alexeyev, August 1941 issue of "Strength and Health" magazine with front cover photo of John Grimek the 1940 and 1941 Mr. America signed in ballpoint pen on front cover "To My Friend Harry A Great Journalist Who Knows His Job. All The Best Harry And Keep It Up John C. Grimek", signed photo and two handwritten signed postcards from Bob Hoffman, and 1998 "Dedication Of An Official State Historical Marker Honoring Bob Hoffman 1998" leaflet signed by R. C. Smith and Jan Dellinger. Other items include: September 1943 issue of Strength and Health with Jules Bacon Mr. America cover, photos of bodybuilders and weightlifters, "Press Guide AAU USA National Weightlifting Team" 1978 booklet with Harry McLaughlin laminated press pass with photo, 1980 Olympic weightlifting booklet, along with numerous newspaper clippings and articles including Harry McLaughlin becoming editor of "Strength and Health" magazine for a brief period including his I.D. card signed by Bob Hoffman. Most items are in VF/Exc. condition. A comprehensive and historical group.
