Item Description
9x23.5x5" deep corrugated cardboard box has art image on side panel with text "Jimmy Nelson's Danny O'Day Humphrey Higsbye Ventriloquist Dummies" with art image of all three and text at left and right "Featured On Texaco Star Theatre/Coast To Coast T.V. Stars". Made by National Mask & Puppet Corp Brooklyn N.Y. c. early 1950s. Box has dust soil and creasing. VG. Contains 24" tall dummy with composition head and hands wearing oil cloth-like shoes and cotton twill "Texaco" uniform including hat. Chest area has fabric label "Jimmy Nelson's Danny O'Day" along with applied fabric "Texaco" patch on chest and hat. Hat is a bit wrinkled and hat patch is a bit curled at bottom otherwise figure is Exc./NM. Rare, especially in this condition with box. Jimmy Nelson came up with Danny O'Day in the mid-1940s and had him made by ventriloquist figure maker Frank Marshall who had also made Edgar Bergen's Charlie McCarthy and Paul Winchell's Jerry Mahoney. Nelson had his first appearance with Danny on the Ed Sullivan Show in Sept. 1950 and was hired as a regular on Milton Berle's Texaco Star Theatre in 1950. He went on to even greater success in the mid-1950s with the Nestle company and the dog Farfel singing their jingle.
