Item Description
Four items c.1930s. First is 7x9" glossy news service photo dated May 10, 1937 on reverse showing Alice Marble with paper caption on reverse noting she is going to compete in the City of London championship prior to the opening of Wimbledon. (See previous item Alice Marble signed photo # 1221). Photo has a few photographer’s black crop marks for printing purposes, otherwise Fine. Next is 3-3/8x5.25" real photo postcard of Betty Nuthall showing her in tennis outfit holding two rackets with photographer stamp at lower right “Published by E. Trim & Co. Wimbledon”. Unused and Exc.with superb image. Nuthall won a Women’s Singles title at the US Championships in 1930 and was the last British female player to win the title until 1968. She won the Women’s Doubles at the US Championships in 1930, 31, and 33 and at the 1931 French Championship. Next two items are for Helen Wills. First is 7-3/8x9-5/8" glossy news service photo dated 1-15-31 with printed caption. Sharp image shows her holding racket standing on steps talking to noted artist Diego Rivera as he “Sketches Her In Action” at Golden Gate Park. Photo has some rippling and lt. creasing, mostly from applied captions on reverse. Good/VG. Fourth item is 6x8.5" “Helen Wills” art exhibit catalog titled “Exhibition Of Drawings By Helen Wills From April 15 To April 26 At Grants Central Art Galleries”. 12 pages include photo of her holding tennis racket and includes several self portraits of her in action as well as other tennis players. Covers have lt. dust soil with some lt. aging. Cover is Fine, inside is Exc. Wills won two Gold Medals at the 1924 Olympics and went on to win many tournaments in the 1920s and 1930s. Wonderful group of historical items relating to top female tennis stars of the 20th century. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
