Item Description
4-1/8x6-3/8" glossy photo shows 14 players standing full figure in uniform holding bats on grassy field c.1921-22. Photo just predates what some call the greatest in Cuban League history, the 1923-24 Santa Clara team. Photo has scattered lt. wear around edges and has lt. aging and is a bit yellowed but still glossy and Fine. The Leopardos began play in 1922 to provide competition for their main Cuban rivals, the Almendares and Habana teams. Both clubs were owned by Abel Linares who also became owner of the new Santa Clara Club. Santa Clara did not finish it’s first season but withdrew from the league in protest over claims that Sunday games played there should not count in league standings. The team rejoined the league in 1923-24. Alejandro Oms played in the Cuban League from 1922 to 1946 and led the league in batting averages three times: 1924, 1928-29, and 1929-30. He won the Cuban’s Leagues Most Valuable Player Award in 1928-29 and he ranks second with an all-time career batting average of .345. He was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1944. A great image. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
