Item Description
This beautiful piece consists of a .75x15/16" brass frame complete w/original bar pin and catch on the reverse. The front has an elevated thick piece of glass w/beveled edges over a beautifully hand-colored scene. When the paper insert was cut to go under the glass, most of the first letter of his name was removed so just a tiny fragment of the letter "H" can be seen at the upper left corner w/magnification o/w the inscription was meant to read "Harrison & Reform." In addition to being a rare hand-colored example, as opposed to the reverse on glass 'sulfide' versions, this piece is remarkable because it actually depicts Harrison outside his log cabin. Two tiny figures in the foreground represent him shaking hands w/military veteran in a top hat who has a wooden leg and holds a crutch. Scene details include trees to left and right, rwb flag flowing from the pole on the cabin's roof, a hard cider barrel alongside the cabin, both a cannon and axe in the grassy areas at right, in the distance is a rail fence w/tiny figure holding a horse-drawn plow. Entire scene is bright and clean. The glass corners on the left side have tiny defects. Upper left has just a virtual pinpoint dot flake off the side while the bottom left has a 1/16" sliver gone. Neither tiny defect shows much at all and are essentially invisible without magnification. Nice luster on the brass frame. Extremely fine and one of the very few pieces of this type to actually depict Harrison. From the Hake collection.
