Item Description
Art is for cartoon directed by Bert Gillett released on July 1, 1933. Five mimeographed sheets, each 8.5x14" are stapled together at left side. Sheets have eight pre-printed squares, each 2 1/8x2.75". Of the 40 squares, only five do not have a drawing in either lead or colored pencil. Most squares also have a hand-letter number just above top of panel but sheets are not stapled together in sequence. Storyline of cartoon has Mickey and the gang going to a lavish premiere of their new cartoon which many noted movie stars of the day also attend. Some drawings are a bit tighter than others but scenes and captions include: “Rogers Pulls Mickey Out On Stage, Stars Start To Come Up On Stage, Garbo Advances On Pair, Garbo Crawls Up On Stage, Garbo Talks Kisses Mickey”. Last image on the sheet has Pluto licking Mickey in bed, obviously waking him up from his movieland dream. Another sheet has wonderful image of well-dressed Mickey and Minnie arriving at theater in limousine and walking down carpet with Pluto. Remainder of images are mainly devoted to stars with their names just below squares. Includes Lugosi, March, and Karloff together; Laurel & Hardy, Durante, Keaton with Okie, Durante (two different), Dressler-Beery; Garbo, Ed Wynn, Will Hayes (two different). Top sheet has moderate age with a few small edge tears and creases with some foxing at left side. Image areas are Fine. Rest of sheets have a few lt. handling creases with bit of wear in blank margin edges but otherwise Fine/VF images. Nice examples of the early prelininary artwork involved in making a classic cartoon. All sheets shown online.
