Item Description
2x2-5/8" Cuban card issued as a premium by Billiken brand cigars. Cards in this set feature players from the 1923-24 Cuban Professional League. The set includes 15 cards each for the four teams that participated that season: Almendares, Habana, Marianao, Santa Clara. Glossy front features a bw photo, players name and team "Mendez, S Clara B.B.C." Superb crisp, clear image. The back of the card has an ad for "Billiken." Cards in this elusive set are among the scarcest and most popular of the pre-war Cuban issues and this is one of the key cards from the set. The "Black Diamond" as Mendez was referred to was inducted into the National Baseball Hall Of Fame in 2006 and is one of the true legends of the game including his accolades as both player and coach in the Negro Leagues. Designated by SGC as being from the "Richard Merkin Collection" and comes with Hake's COA.
