Auction #205 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1426 in auction 205
Item Description
2-15/16x4-7/8" card shows all the 1888 candidates enjoying issuer's root beer. Card has 1884 copyright but was issued for 1888. Back wall of room shows busts of Grant and second man (Lee? Hancock?) flanking banner "Let Us Have Peace." In the foreground, accented by newspapers "N.Y. Tribune/N.Y. Staats/Mail Press", sit Cleveland, Harrison, Thurman and Morton all holding glasses of root beer. At upper left, Prohibition V.P. candidate Brooks brings more glasses on a tray. At right, Prohibition presidential candidate Fisk sits alone and he is being served (apparently water in a flask) by Belva Lockwood, suffragist and the 1884 and 1888 presidential candidate of the National Equal Rights Party. The card text at left reads "We May Differ In Politics," and at right "But We All Agree That:." The answer to the printed text is in the form of a purple ink stamp on the bottom margin. The words at the middle are barely visible but can be made out to read: "Jacob Christ's Red (?) Root Beer Beats Them All." Tiny tip off upper left corner and penciled numbers on blank reverse. One of the very few presidential campaign items to picture Belva Lockwood. We know of one other example that has sold in the $400 range.
