Auction #205 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1426 in auction 205
Item Description
15/16" holed as made. Hake #3045. Front has portrait of him in military uniform plus his name and the initials of the engraver "G.H." below. Reverse has eagle with slogan "The Union Must And Shall Be Preserved." DeWitt notes that the reverse of the piece as well as the reeded edge were made to simulate official gold pieces and that the extra heavy coat of brass gilt, as on this example, was to give the pieces the appearance of gold. Much of this deep golden gilt finish remains and the piece overall is VF. Scarce.
