Item Description
Beautiful lustrous brass example of highly popular design listed by Albert as Washington 1A. Size is 35mm (1-5/16") with original shank on reverse. Extremely clean with very sharp details excepting vertical stripes on center shield and very small area near rim at 5 o'clock where only traces of the "RA" of "ERA" were struck. The word "ERA" is noticeably lightly struck in Albert's plate example so likely the die was deteriorating at this small area. Albert notes origin of the slogan thusly: At sunset March 3rd, the Confederation of the States was fired out by 13 guns from the fort opposite Bowling Green (in New York City) and on March 4th the New Era was ushered in by firing 11 guns in honor of 11 states that had adopted the Constitution. Overall, a superior and VF example of the only dated design struck to commemorate Washington's inaugural.
