Item Description
We've seen an assortment of early 1900s badges for coal unions and coal miners, but this is the only vintage item we've seen to also reference "Operators." The piece is beautifully designed and constructed. It is 3-3/8" tall. At top black color representing a mountainside of coal surrounds a tunnel featuring a coal car on rail tracks. Beneath this is the date of "1906." The oval at left shows elevators with eleven men inside. The oval to the right shows the interior of a mine with support beams and three workers. Chain links suspend the lower piece designed as a railroad coal car with black accents along the top edge and tiny bumps representing heaped up coal. The car is inscribed with the state names "Ohio/Indiana/Pennsylvania/Illinois." In the foreground the text reads "Joint Inter-state/Convention/Coal Miners & Operators/Indianapolis/Jan. 25, 1906." The item has name of maker W&H on reverse. A beautiful piece in NM condition. A very historic piece in the struggle between miners and owners.
