Item Description
This is an exceptionally large and extremely colorful celluloid portrait plaque measuring 6x8". Outstanding design features roses, leaves, stems, large butterfly all surrounding gold oval with center picture of young black man in coat, tie and vest. A tiny inscription at bottom center reads "G.F. Eschwei" which is the manufacturer although it's not a name we've seen before. Back of the piece is covered in tin with brass flashing, most of which remains. There are two slots where a wire easel was once positioned. This is gone but easily replaced. A very seldom seen format as these large portrait buttons were typically round or oval and also the largest celluloid piece we've seen to depict an African-American. Extremely Fine and displaying Mint as made.
