Item Description
Our quotation comes from a New York Times article published Aug. 7, 1902 with headline and sub-headline reading "Conference Of Negros./Christian And Educational Congress Of Young Colored People At Atlanta - Bishop Gaines's Encouraging Address." Additional text in the first paragraph reads "Fully 7,000 Negros Gathered This Afternoon In The Agricultural Building At Piedmont Park For The Opening Session Of The Negro Young People's Christian And Educational Congress..." This beautifully designed 1.25" button has a six pointed star with each arm bearing a letter "NYPCEC" representing the gathering's official title. In addition, button reads at top and bottom "Atlanta/August 5-11, 1902." At center is a black preacher to the right of a second black man falling over (having been struck by the spirit) with surrounding caption "Reaching The Unreached/Race For Christ." Spring pin holds 1.75" American flag ribbon. Reverse has W&H backpaper with a little dust soil and a tiny spot missing from the center. Only example we know of. Celluloid is Mint.
