Item Description
Both are published by Macaulay. 2.5x7x9" tall die-cut cardboard slipcase is illustrated in wood cut style by John Held Jr. One side has image of woman crying with text "There Are Songs That Make You Happy" while other side shows well dressed happy man with text "There Are Songs That Make You Sad." Slipcase spine lists two books inside: "My Pious Friends And Drunken Companions/More Pious Friends And Drunken Companions". Each book is 6-7/8x8.75" hardcover complete with dust wrapper. Each has 192 pages with numerous illustrations by John Held, Jr. First title is copyright 1927 6th printing December 1928. Second title is copyright 1928. Slipcase is missing top panel and is a bit tanned with some edge wear. VG/Fine. Edges of dust wrappers have tiny bit of wear and dust wrapper spines are a bit faded. Both books are Exc. Comes with 4x6" two sided membership card for "Society Of The Forty Pious Friends And Drunken Companions" with humorous text on each side. Card is lightly but evenly tanned. Unused and Exc. Frank Shay who compiled these anthologies was a member of the art community in Greenwich Village. He was a publisher and also owner of the "Greenwich Village Book Store" between 1920 and 1924. Both books are scarce, especially with slipcase and dust wrappers. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
