Item Description
4.5x6.25" encapsulated photo shows 12 member team with 11 in uniforms and apparent coach wearing suit at left of back row. This photo was most likely produced/distributed by the school as it appears to have been commercially printed as opposed to being a photograph developed from a negative. Several of these types of team photos from various sports depicting Columbia University players have been found from this same era. The team included future Baseball HOF member Eddie Collins the year before his Major League debut with the Philadelphia Athletics. He played from 1906 to 1930 for the Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago White Sox. A native of Millerton, New York, Collins was a graduate of Columbia University (where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity), at a time when few Major League players had attended college. Lower right corner of image area has tiny printed text "Columbia B.B. '05" Image area is sharp and clean. A superb and historic photo for this 1939 HOF inductee.
