Item numbers 1 through 1278 in auction 206
Item Description
From the Estate of Peter J. Vorzimmer, co-author of the 1967 NASA Project Gemini Chronology book. See item #1046 for Vorzimmer biography. Glossy photo has been professionally framed and matted to 5.5x9" in a 11x14" brushed aluminum frame w/UV glass. Photo shows Schweickart inspecting the partially assembled Apollo 9 command module control panels. Schweickart has signed in black felt tip pen "To Peter - Best Of Luck - Rusty Schweickart." Exc. After launching on March 3, 1969, Apollo 9 was the third manned mission in the American Apollo space program, and was the first flight of the Command/Service Module with the Lunar Module. Its three-person crew, consisting of Commander James McDivitt, Command Module Pilot David Scott, and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart, tested several aspects critical to landing on the Moon, including the Lunar Module engines, backpack life support systems, navigation systems, and docking maneuvers. The mission was the second manned launch of a Saturn V rocket. Schweickart was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1973 for his part in saving SkyLab 1. A great piece from a NASA insider present during the Golden Age of manned space exploration. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA COA.
