Item Description
This and items 1047-1055 are from the Estate of Peter J. Vorzimmer, a senior research historian for NASA. He also taught at Temple 1967-1994 and worked as an assistant professor of history at the University of Washington. Vorzimmer was also co-author of the 1967 NASA Project Gemini Chronology book. These items were acquired by the consignor from Vorzimmer's widow, one of the first female US Navy combat pilots and the first female pilot to fly commercial Boeing 747s. Glossy photo has been professionally framed and matted to 7x9.25" in a 12.25x14.25" brushed aluminum frame w/UV glass. Photo shows Gemini 4 Commander James A. McDivitt in space suit w/Alan Shepard in suit beside him. Photo has been inscribed to Vorzimmer in black felt tip pen "Best Wishes To Pete - James A. McDivitt." Exc. McDivitt was launched w/Edward H. White aboard Gemini 4 on June 3, 1965. The four-day mission made 66 orbits. The first mission objective was to attempt the first space rendezvous w/the spacecraft's spent Titan II launch vehicle's upper stage. This was not successful as McDivitt was unable to get close enough due to several factors. The rendezvous attempt was halted to conserve fuel and preserve the second, more important objective, which was for White to perform the first US space walk. McDivitt controlled the capsule and photographed White during the walk. A great piece from a NASA insider present during the Golden Age of manned space exploration. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA COA.
