Item Description
For Jan Wahl biography, see item #2000. 3.5x6.5" envelope postmarked Aug. 4 and addressed in ink w/handwritten return address "M. Sendak" on reverse. 8.25x11" sheet of unlined paper has been folded horizontally at center, forming letter format that reads like a book. Letter is two "pages" long and written in ballpoint pen. Contents include - "I Have Been Drawbridged In - Hopefully Locked In My Ocean Castle - Waiting For Dame Inspiration - She Obviously Spent Her Vacation Somewhere Else!" Sendak goes to proclaim "Good That Fieldmouse Makes His Way! I Am So Pleased." He goes on, "As For Cabbage Moon - Can’t Wait To See It!." ("Pleasant Fieldmouse" was published in 1964, "Cabbage Moon" in 1965.) He wraps up the letter w/"Now Back To Beating My Old Head. Wish Me Luck." Signed "Yours, Maurice." Envelope has tear at right side as opened, letter is folded as mailed. VF+. Important Sendak personal content to a friend and collaborator. The full letter is available to read online.
