Auction #206 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1278 in auction 206
Item Description
First is 1.75" button with metal back and bar pin. This has photo of locomotive beneath union name "B of LE" with surrounding text "John Hill Sub-Division No.248 Elkheart, Ind." Below is damaged ribbon indicating piece was issued for 25th anniversary in 1909. Hill had a technical bent and became a railroad engineer and then an editor at the publication Locomotive Engineer. He then entered the academic book business and in 1909 merged with competing publisher James McGraw in 1909 to form McGraw-Hill Book Company. While ribbon is damaged cello remains Exc. although just a hint of cloudiness. Second item is 2.75" tall made of a marbleized celluloid shield shape with a recessed compartment holding a separate piece of celluloid with illustration of steaming locomotive beneath numbers "319" and above designation "B. of L.F." Back of the piece once had three small metal prongs to fasten it to a fabric ribbon. While those are gone what remains is Mint and most unusual and attractive. Third item is 2-3/8" mint brass luster shield frame holding color celluloid of steaming locomotive pulling coal car and passenger cars beneath the inscription "W.M.R.R." (possibly White Mountain Rail Road). Top has a loop and was probably once suspended from a ribbon badge. What is here is essentially Mint. All three pieces are the only examples we've seen.
