Item Description
8x10" original glossy c. 1940 with image of five team members kneeling on ballfield, all in uniforms including warm up jackets and with baseball gloves. Left to right are: Fran Mathews, Clarence Israel, Johnny Johnson, Monte Irvin and Len Pearson. Irvin played his first full season in the Negro Leagues in 1939 making this an early image. Reverse has photographers ink stamp "Kindly Credit Photo Handy & Boesser Photographers Press Service" along w/their address. Photo has heavy and obvious wear/aging including missing pieces from top two corners and at three places on the margin, numerous margin creases and tears w/some small tape repairs. 1" tear at foot of Mathews. Overall just Fair but the image remains largely unaffected, still bold, strong and distinct. Margin defects would easily matte out and photo would still display very nicely as is. In our last auction a 1939 Eagles full team photo (in Good condition) sold for $2,219. This franchise played in the second Negro National League from 1936 to 1948 and was formed when Abe Manley and his wife Effa Manley, founders of the Brooklyn Eagles, purchased the Newark Dodgers franchise and merged the two teams. Effa managed the team, making her the first woman who owned and operated a professional baseball team. The team won the 1946 Negro League World Series, beating the Kansas City Monarchs.
