Auction #207 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1234 in auction 207
Item Description
c.1940s. Flannel jersey, pants and pair of stretch cotton leggings. 29" tall jersey has felt name on front and felt number "44" on back. Inside collar has “Carmona” label. All four buttons intact. 36" long pants have felt belt loops. pockets on back complete w/buttons. Entire uniform shows heavy wear and aging w/areas of red color bleed, some other staining, scattered small insect holes, etc. Overall Good to VG but the wear and tear add to its charm as a game used uniform. In our Nov. 2011 auction we offered a similar uniform which sold for over $2,000. The Mexican League was founded in 1925 with six teams including Club Mexico. Between 1925 and 1940 games were played almost exclusively in Mexico City and highlighted by performances of important Cuban players. In the 1940s co-owner Jorge Pasquel tried to create a league in Mexico similar to the Major Leagues. He hired players from the Negro Leagues and by the mid-1940s he hired players away from the Major Leagues but had to decrease salaries and eventually his plan failed as important players abandoned him. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
