Item Description
Bastogne is a small Belgian town liberated by the Allies during World War II in late 1944. Bastogne was attacked by German forces shortly after. Hitler was looking for control of the Ardennes, his goal being to advance to Antwerp, cut off supply and separate British from American troops. On Dec. 16, German artillery began the Battle of the Bulge by attacking the sparsely deployed American troops around Bastogne. A few days later, Brigadier General McAuliffe and the 101st Airborne Division along w/elements of the 10th Armored Division and the 82nd Airborne arrived to counter-attack but, after heavy fighting, became encircled within the town. On Dec. 22, the Germans asked for the American surrender, to which the McAuliffe answered "Nuts!" The following day, weather cleared up, allowing airstrikes and the parachuting of much needed supplies. On Dec. 26, troops under the command of General Patton broke the deadlock. This moment in history has been captured by this 5.25x5.5" solid bronze plaque weighing nearly a pound. It shows large figures of McAuliffe being handed a piece of paper by a German soldier, w/American and swastika-emblazoned Nazi flags in bkg. In between the figures is large raised text reading "Nuts" and Bastogne is seen in bkg. w/parachutes delivering supplies. Text along top border reads "Airborne" and tiny "Decber [sic] 44" date is added under "Nuts." Heavy cast loop on back for wall hanging. Nice patina. NM.
