Auction #208 - Part II
Item numbers 1278 through 3040 in auction 208
Item Description
Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. The name originates in Ancient Greece, where it was believed that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks and Romans wore amethyst and made drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. It is one of several forms of quartz. Amethyst is also the traditional birthstone for February. We are offering a 4.25" tall (on .75" deep, 3" dia. stone base) piece of amethyst that has mined in Marabá, Pará, Barzil. The amethyst has been carved into the head and neck of an American Bison. The artist was able to orient the raw stone so that the Bison's head is amethyst and the bottom is rock crystal. Tiger's Eye carved horns and inlaid eyes. Exc.
