Item Description
Mookaite is an Australian jasper that combines the lighter colors of yellow and red jasper. The name mookaite is derived from the locality where the rock is dug, namely Mooka Creek. According to locals, the Aboriginal word "mooka" means "running waters," no doubt in reference to the many fresh water springs that feed Mooka Creek. We are offering a 3.5x3-7/8" tall, 3" deep carving of a Laughing Buddha, also known Budai, a Chinese deity. This carving appears to have the Budai seated against a large cloth sack, for which he gets his name. While it may appear that the Budai was carved separately and attached to the bkg., this is not the case, as it was carved from a solid block of mookaite from Australia, the delightful variation in color adding to the piece's visual appeal. The very unusual natural yellow and red coloring of the jasper makes for a spectacular combination rare in nature. Exc.
