Item Description
Pair of vintage 8x10" NASA photos showing astronauts John Glenn and Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr. in civilian attire. First photo shows Glenn wearing lapel pin for the Mercury Seven program. Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth and the third American in space. He was also one of the Mercury Seven, the elite military test pilots selected by NASA to operate the experimental Mercury spacecraft and become the first American astronauts. He has signed in black ink, adding an inscription that reads "Best Regards To Earle Walter And Many Thanks For Your Thoughtfulness - JHGlenn Jr." Glenn has also dated the photo "6/4/62," a few months after his ground-breaking Feb. 20, 1962 orbit. .25x1.75" streak of surface paper off margin at lower right, though it does not affect photo image. If framed, would display Exc. Second photo shows Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr. (1927-2004), also known as Gordon Cooper (which he has signed in black ink) wearing lapel pin for Apollo 14 program. Cooper was one of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space program of the United States. Exc. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA COAs.
