Item Description
Extensive lot of 30 items related to and/or signed by General William Childs Westmoreland (1914–2005), who commanded US military operations in the Vietnam War at its peak (1964–1968), during the Tet Offensive. He later served as U.S. Army Chief of Staff from 1968 to 1972. Main items in lot are four signed photos of the general, three measuring 8x10" and one 5x7" showing Westmoreland at Gettysburg, PA. dedication. All have been signed in black felt tip pen, two are inscribed to York, PA. newsman Harry McLaughlin. NM. Next is group of five items related to the "One Hundred Twenty-First Annual Memorial Day Exercises" on May 30, 1988 at Gettysburg, PA. Program has been signed by Westmoreland in black felt tip pen and by five others. Typed copy of Westmoreland's remarks have been signed by him in blue ink. VF-Exc. Next is group of six letters (five typed, one handwritten in blue felt tip pen) on "William Childs Westmoreland - General, United States Army, Retired" letterhead addressed to Harry McLaughlin. Letters are dated 1977-1988 and thank McLoughlin for his correspondence and clippings and mention signed enclosures. Letters have all been signed by Westmoreland. Folded as mailed, Exc. Lot comes w/typed Westmoreland biography, newspaper clipping, three envelopes addressed to McLaughlin from Westmoreland and 12 3.25x5" photos of events that took place at Gettysburg. All items are from the collection of York, PA newsman Harry McLaughlin and come with Hake's COA.
