Item Description
Albert lists three varieties of this design in his book American Uniform & Historical Buttons. Varieties are distinguished by the spacing between George Washington's initials as the smallest, the medium and the largest space. This 34mm (1-3/8") example is his number WI 11 A with the smallest amount of space between the initials. A neatly replaced circular brass shank is on the reverse. On the obverse, the letter "W" was not perfectly formed in the die strike. On the left diagonal stroke, there is a small flat spot surrounded by some tiny recesses in the background metal. Everything remains clearly legible and the slogan "Long Live The President" is particularly well struck and without wear. Never cleaned and with original patina on the very thin brass planchet.
