Item Description
1-1/16" in brass but this example was once silvered and highlights remain on each side. Aside from the loss of the silver flashing the condition is essentially Mint with almost no wear to the details. Front has his portrait, name and "1868" date along with the name of the engraver "J.E. Ellis" along the edge of his shoulder at left. Reverse has his famous quotation "I Propose To Fight It Out On This Line If It Takes All Summer." DeWitt notes that this piece was struck in "great quanity at Waterbury" but few examples have survived in this essentially uncirculated condition. The more typical version of this piece is DeWitt 1868-30 which does not include the engravers name and which has three stars on his epaulette rather than the four stars on this example. DeWitt lists this example as being known only in Brass but this piece has obvious silver luster remaining so it was unknown to him.
