Item Description
1.5" with front piece of tin covered in scrolling lines. Reverse of the piece is flat tin with attached 1-9/16" long stickpin. The front of the piece has an oval window. The pin on the back of the piece is firmly attached but swivels freely. When moved to the extreme right an oval photo appears in the window. The paper is very dark brown with stain and details show best with magnification. We believe this pictures Thomas Brackett Reed, The Speaker of the House of Representatives 1889-1891 and 1895-1899. He was a Presidential hopeful for 1896. Moving the pin to the right changes the image to that of a profile of McKinley facing left. This paper is also quite tan but the photo is clearly of him. Moving the pin again to the left brings up the final photo and that is of Benjamin Harrison who was also a potential 1896 candidate, although he declined to run. While this photo also has brown stain the details of the image are much clearer than the other two images. Perhaps a novelty created in advance of the 1896 Republican convention. Sen. Charles Dick Collection. Rare and unlisted in Hake.
