Item Description
These ten items from the 1930s to 1948 range from 5/8" to 1-5/8" litho pair from 1948. All relate to a plan proposed by Francis Townsend for a guaranteed monthly old-age pension to be paid for by a national sales tax on business transactions. The idea inspired organizers in almost every state and in 1935, partly in the response to the popularity of the plan, President Roosevelt proposed his own old-age policy which eventually passed and was named Social Security. The only damaged button in this group is from their 1941 convention and this has all over staining. The 1.25" celluloid portrait button is quite scarce. The two small buttons in the bottom row may not be directly related to the Townsend movement but all others are.
