Item Description
See previous related item. Each of these is 1.75" and while both say "I'm For Robert Welch" they are each in a different type face with different arrangement of the words. Welch was an opponent of Communism even in his teenage years. As a Republican he lost an election for Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts in 1950. In 1952 he supported Robert Taft and was a prominent contributor to Joseph McCarthy's 1952 Senate re-election campaign (see McCarthy dinner tickets #476). Welch with several others founded the John Birch Society in December 1958 and these two buttons are from the mid-1960s. At the time, William F. Buckeley, Jr. denounced Welch in his magazine National Review as promoting bizarre conspiracy theories and for working with racists. Buckeley feared Welch and his views would tarnish the entire conservative movement. These are both NM displaying Mint. From the Marshall Levin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
