Item Description
The Equal Rights Amendment was originally written by feminist Alice Paul and introduced in Congress for the first time in 1923. In 1972 having passed both houses of Congress it went to the state legislators for ratification. Thanks largely to the efforts of Phyllis Schlafly who mobilized conservatives in opposition, the final deadline mandated by Congress expired June 30, 1982. That is the inspiration of this 3" cartoon button showing rear view of an elephant above female arms and legs extending from a large pile of excrement above the caption "'I Said Sit!'" A handbag in the foreground reads "G.O.P. Women" and one hand holds "E.R.A." banner while another extending from the pile holds a banner reading "Choice." Curl has initials of National Women's Political Caucus along with name of board member and activist Mary Stanley of Fresno, Ca. Numerous but tiny pinpoint marks on the cello which seems to be a function of the lamination process rather than any actual damage. Button displays clean, glossy and Mint. Comes along with c. 1982 3" button with word "Join" at the center in yellow and large surrounding purple letters standing for the group National Organization for Women. NM displaying Mint. From the Marshall Levin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
